Day 142 / Day 60 – Sigmoidoscopy update

Day 142 / Day 60 – Sigmoidoscopy update

I had the sigmoidoscopy this afternoon. Physically, it was one of the worst prep experiences I’ve had – the IV was a hassle and so were some other things I won’t mention here, but I’m still dealing with the painful/unpleasant effects 5 hours later.

The results came in around 8:30 pm tonight: the long and short of it is that there is a definite narrowing and while the scope didn’t show that it is a definite “no” for the surgery, it also didn’t show enough to make it a “yes.”

So Monday I will go to the hospital at 10am for a noon surgery. The surgeon will do a different kind of scope and will carefully “distend” the area before deciding how to proceed. If he feels comfortable with how it distends and how it looks, he will go ahead with the ileostomy takedown. If he feels it is not flexible or wide enough so that it will not cause a blockage, he will not proceed with the surgery. The plan would then be to keep the ileostomy as is and do a weekly or biweekly distention/stretch until it is flexible enough.

While it isn’t uncommon for a suture site to be narrow, the concern is that the area may be thick and fibrous like the endometriosis they took out, which would make it precarious to stretch out. I’m thankful the surgeon is so thorough in checking it all out before proceeding.

I admit I feel pretty crummy tonight and this latest news is discouraging. Would you please pray with me for another miracle (the first one being that the mass was not cancerous)? Please pray that the area would enlarge or would at least stretch easily so that the surgery can be done. And please pray that, if it is the Lord’s will for the surgery to not happen, I will have the grace to accept it – I’m feel like I’m ready to be done with this journey, nevertheless “not my will but His be done.”

Thank you dear prayer warriors. Your prayers mean more than you can ever imagine.
